Besan Laddu, also known as Besan Ke Laddu or Gram Flour Laddu, is a popular Indian sweet that originates from North India. It is a traditional sweet treat that has been prepared and enjoyed in Indian households for generations. Ingredients:
- 2 cups of besan (gram flour)
- 1 cup of powdered sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 cup of ghee (clarified butter)
- 1/4 teaspoon of cardamom powder
- A pinch of saffron strands (optional)
- Chopped and roasted nuts like almonds or cashews for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Roast the Besan: In a heavy-bottomed pan or kadai, heat 1/2 cup of ghee on low-medium heat. Add 2 cups of besan to the melted ghee.
- Roast Continuously: Keep the heat on low-medium and continuously stir the besan in the ghee. Roast until it turns a deep golden brown color and releases a nutty aroma. This step can take about 15-20 minutes.
- Add Cardamom and Saffron: Add 1/4 teaspoon of cardamom powder and a pinch of saffron strands (if using) to the roasted besan. Mix well and turn off the heat.
- Cool Slightly: Allow the roasted besan mixture to cool slightly. It should be warm to the touch but not too hot.
- Add Sugar and Roasted Nuts: Once the mixture is comfortably warm, add 1 cup of powdered sugar and roasted almonds or cashews to it. Adjust the sugar quantity to your taste. Mix well until the sugar is fully incorporated into the besan mixture.
- Shape into Laddus: Grease your palms with a little ghee to prevent sticking, then take small portions of the mixture and shape them into round laddus. You can make them as big or small as you prefer.
- Garnish: If desired, press a chopped almond or cashew into the top of each laddu while shaping them.
- Cool Completely: Allow the Besan Laddus to cool completely. They will firm up as they cool.
- Store: Once completely cooled, store the Besan Laddus in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
Here are some additional tips for making Besan Laddu:
- Use good quality Besan (gram flour) for the best flavor and texture.
- Roast the Besan on low heat until it is light brown and fragrant. This will help to develop the flavor of the ladoos.
